My Requirement for Filters
Although post-photo processing in Photoshop, or any similar image processing program, has eliminated the need for many special effect filters, there is still a requirement for several filters in digital photography:
- Polarizer - This is essential for maximizing color saturation in canyon country, especially during the flat lighting hours of 10am - 2pm on a sunny day.
- Neutral Density Filters - These are required for long daylight time exposures. I use these frequently to capture motion in flowing water.
- UV filter - For lens protection.
I have no intention of buying any accessory lenses for my 5700, so I was looking for a compact filter attachment system. I bought this camera because of its small size, in contrast to my existing SLR and all of its lenses. Additionally, I already have an assortment of 58mm filters from my SLR system.
Possible Solutions
Nikon's Adapter
Nikon finally came out with a filter adapter for the 5700, although it requires large 67mm filters. This adapter ring has three components, a cylindrical tube, a conical tube, and a front cap. The adapter scews onto the cylindrical lens housing that surrounds the 5700's lens. It costs around $35. I've read messages from quite a few people complaining that if you don't use the Nikon filters designed for this adapter (Nikon 4-filter kit: $100), the lens may actually bump up against the back of the filter causing a "lens error" message.

I bought the Nextphoto 58mm adapter because I simply wanted to use my existing 58mm filters on my 5700. The Nextphoto adapter snaps onto the end of the lens utilizing an o-ring and is quite secure. The filters then simply screw onto the end of the adapter, just like on an SLR. I leave the adapter on my 5700 all of the time. Basically, for $25 I can use all of my existing filters on my 5700. I love it!

Nextphoto 58mm Adapter Ring - The O-ring securely
holds it in place on
the end of the lens so there is no way this adapter will ever
accidentally fall off.

When the power is off, the adapter fits perfectly against the
5700's lens housing.
It's interesting to note that the 58mm adapter is the exact same
diameter as the
lens housing, which makes it look like original equipment. A
standard 58mm lens
cap works fine with this setup.

Please note that I have no connection with this company. I am just a very satisfied user of one of their products!
